Sometimes our work is about finding someone... and bringing them home. Several months ago, Battalion Search & Rescue was contacted by a Catholic sister from a religious order working with a humanitarian organization in southern Mexico that helps families searching for missing loved ones. They asked if we would consider a search unlike anything we normally do. A young man from Chiapas left home seeking a better life. Somewhere along that journey, he died in the New Mexico desert. Another migrant later found his remains. Unable to contact emergency services, he did what he could. He built a simple cross, gathered stones, covered the remains with dignity, and carefully remembered the location so that someone might someday return. For years, that simple cross has quietly marked the place where someone's son, brother, or friend was last known to rest. That day may finally have come.
