🚨 THEY NEVER CAME.
We reported six separate sites containing human remains.
Women. Clothing. Cell phones. Personal belongings. Even identification.
Three different members of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office—Deputies Vargas, Pruitt, and Captain Johnston—failed to respond or left reported sites unrecovered for months. Some remained unrecovered for more than a year. When we returned, clothing and human remains were still present at several locations.
Later, two former deputies or their family members publicly alleged that deputies had been instructed to stand down on certain reports involving human remains and to route those reports through Sheriff Kim Stewart.
Those allegations deserve an independent investigation.
Why were these sites left unattended?
Why were reports of human remains not handled promptly?
Who made those decisions?
The New Mexico Office of the medical investigator was also notified on each and every report. They also failed to respond.
