Sophie Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes in women’s sports have drawn attention from the White House.
In an ESPN profile story published last week, Cunningham clarified her stance on trans athletes.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that.,'" she said in the article.
"I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Per the Washington Post, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump supports Cunningham’s stance and has been following the discussion.
Cunningham, who stood by her remarks, said she is “not a very political person” but remains committed to her personal beliefs and values.
