Virginia Tech’s use of Enter Sandman began on August 27, 2000 in what would have been their season opener against Georgia Tech. While the game was eventually canceled due to severe thunderstorms in the area, however a tradition that has become one of the best in college football was officially born. After installing a new video board at Lane Stadium prior to the 2000 season, Virginia Tech administrators were tasked with choosing a modern hype track. Before settling on Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” the program considered other options such as Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.” Since the first playing of Enter Sandman, Lane Stadium has become one of the toughest places to play in all of college football.
