Air Namibia almost never made a profit in over 30 years. By 2019, 15 of its 19 routes were losing money, and Windhoek to Frankfurt alone burned over N$300 million a year. When it was liquidated in 2021, 636 people lost their jobs. For those 30 years, every one of those losses was covered by the state, which means by you and I, the taxpayers. Now we are building a new one, Namibia Air. Its gazetted fares propose N$1,327 to Ondangwa, a route where the minister recently cited a ticket of over N$9,000. So the real question is who funds this one, and what for. Are we bringing it back for jobs, for national pride, for routes no private airline will fly? Every one of those is a fair reason.
