Good news: The world’s first octopus farm has been cancelled!
After five years of tireless campaigning by ciwf and unwavering public pressure, Nueva Pescanova has abandoned plans for an octopus farm in Gran Canaria, Spain.
Octopuses are incredibly intelligent. Scientists estimate that they are about as smart as a dog, with around 500 million neurons. Along with a donut-shaped brain in their head, they also have a “mini-brain” in each of their eight arms. They can solve puzzles, use tools, and even recognize people. Farming them would cause serious suffering. It would also be unsustainable, damaging the environment and biodiversity.
Interest in developing octopus farms still remains, so the next step is for governments to ban them outright. For now, we’re celebrating this win for octopuses everywhere!
