The UK Dropped Digital ID... Did It Really?
The headlines say the UK has dropped its Digital ID plans.
But did it really?
As a marketer, one thing I’ve learned is this. Never focus on the branding.
Focus on the product. Because sometimes the product stays exactly the same, it just gets a new name.
From what I can see, the idea of a single government-issued Digital ID may have been dropped, but digital identity itself is still moving forward.
Think about how many services already rely on proving who you are digitally.
Government logins. Digital driving licences. Digital passports. Bank identity checks. Age verification for online services. Facial recognition. Biometric authentication.
Individually, each one sounds convenient. But together, they create a digital identity ecosystem.
Countries like Estonia and Singapore already use digital identity extensively, and several European countries have also adopted national digital identity systems.
So maybe the real question isn’t... ...
