#TakeActionTuesday: As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, we must emphasize that disability rights are civil rights.
July 26 marks the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which, together with the Rehabilitation Act, guarantees equal access and protection from discrimination for people with disabilities, including in school athletics. As we celebrate, we must also remember that promise is still not fully met.
Today, most youth with physical and intellectual disabilities do not meet recommended physical activity levels because inclusive sports opportunities, the number of trained practitioners, and funding remain limited. That’s why organizations like Special Olympics, which serves children and adults with intellectual disabilities, are so critical. They show what access and inclusion can look like in practice through year-round sports training and competition.
