Up until 1992 I did do 2 sets to failure. After 1-2 warm up sets, it was a set taken to failure, followed by a short rest and another set with a 10% reduction in weight, again hammered to failure… just to make sure the message was sent. It was when I met Mike Mentzer and he put me through a biceps workout of one set to complete muscular failure on the Nautilus bicep curl machine. We did a few sessions together with one working set to failure being deployed and I took it onboard. That’s how I trained since and what I put my clients through, it’s one set to failure that takes you to the very limit of your capabilities. My training was already brief, but Mike advised to make them even briefer and focus on one working set to failure… But look, having said that this, if you feel for any reason that you just didn’t nail that set to true failure, then do another.
