Hundreds of thousands across Ottawa and Prescott-Russell received an emergency tornado warning Tuesday, urging residents to take immediate cover.
No tornado touched down in Ottawa, while the strongest local concern was concentrated near Vars, about 35 kilometres southeast of downtown.
Storm chaser Connor Mockett says the warning area was far too large, noting some communities were still seeing sunshine.
He fears repeatedly alerting people who are not actually in danger could create a “boy who cried wolf” effect and cause residents to ignore future warnings. He is calling for narrower, storm-based alerts similar to those used in the United States.
Environment Canada says the warning was justified by multiple signs of possible tornado development, but neither the agency nor Alert Ready clearly explained why such a massive region received it.
