There are 2 primary movement centers in an efficient rotary throw, and they should work simultaneously.
They are:
1- the shoulder girdle cycling the arm in an inside-out (small to big) pathway from prepass through load, release and follow through, and
2- the hips DRIVE-TURN’ing the pelvis and initiating the actions of the front and back legs and feet.
To maximize the proximal sequencing of these two musculoskeletal regions I like to implement two ‘priming’ actions.
The Elbow Circle drill is performed by having the shoulder girdle circle the elbow in a small, fluid, forward path a few times before throwing the ball.
The Hip Snap Drill is performed by suddenly ‘clearing’ the front hip off the midline in a small, twitchy SNAP, SNAP action.
Ultimately the efficient sequencing of these two actions is what will really make the ball jump.
