During USS Constitution’s 84-year active U.S. Navy career (1798-1881), the ship carried up to 48 sails for over 44,000 square feet of sail and needed at least half of its 450-person crew to handle the sails and rigging when the ship was sailing. Constitution can sail under its own power, but since 1881 it has only done so for two very special occasions: July 21, 1997 the ship sailed for one hour off Marblehead, Massachusetts to celebrate its 200th birthday and on August 19, 2012 “Old Ironsides” sailed near the entrance to Boston Harbor to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.   Today, “Old Ironsides” occasionally unfurls the sails for demonstrational purposes only and every time sails are unfurled, Constitution’s officers and crew balance historical authenticity with the responsibility of preserving America’s Ship of State.  When you see Constitution underway in Boston Harbor this summer, you are witnessing an event that celebrates and honors U.S. Naval history.  USS C...
