Finding the best time for a couple’s first dance depends entirely on the couple.
When I am working with a couple who feels nervous about the moment and simply wants to get it out of the way, or when the bride wants to do it before dinner in case anything spills on her dress, we often plan the first dance right at the beginning of the reception. It is a wonderful way to make an entrance, create an immediate celebratory moment and officially kick off the evening.
For couples who feel more relaxed about the timing, I love using the first dance as the transition from dinner into the dance party. Guests have had time to settle in, enjoy their meal and connect with one another. Then, rather than allowing the energy to dip as dinner service wraps up, we bring the couple onto the dance floor, move into the traditional dances and invite everyone to join them.
