In a landmark deal, American healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5bn over allegations that its baby powder and other talc products caused ovarian cancer.
According to the company, the settlement covers about 76,000 claims involved in a decade-long court battle. Despite the deal, Johnson & Johnson’s vice-president of litigation, Erik Haas, has described the claims as “meritless”, insisting that the company was willing to settle in order to get closure.
For the deal to be finalized, it must be accepted by 95% of the ovarian cancer claimants in state or federal courts.
