The royal couple’s appearance drew cheers from the crowd as the Games officially got underway in Scotland.
The new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his wife Marie-France van Heel were also among the guests at the ceremony.
The Commonwealth Games will run until August 2, with athletes from across the Commonwealth competing in a range of sports.
India’s Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Games, while the host city for the 2034 edition has yet to be decided.
