SAILORS FIRST SUNDAY: The CNO puts Sailors First, even those who have long since served in the Navy. This Sunday we celebrate our shipmate Richard L. “Dick” Griffin, a World War II veteran who celebrated his 101st birthday on Wednesday in North Carolina! 🎂⚓️🎈 Griffin joined the Navy war effort on Memorial Day in 1943 and served as a Motor Machinist Mate Second Class aboard USS Oberon (AKA 14). During his time in the Navy, he participated in invasions of Southern France and Okinawa. In later years, he helped organize the ship’s first reunion and hosted the 1992 reunion in Asheville, North Carolina. He also previously served as chairman of the Asheville Western North Carolina Veterans Memorial that created, funded and built the memorial in downtown Asheville. Griffin currently lives in Mars Hill, North Carolina at the Madison Health and Rehabilitation Center, where is well known for saluting the flag as well as singing “God Bless America” and “Anchors Aweigh.” His late wife Al...
