While the US and China fight over the strongest AI, Japan quietly did something sneakier. It's called Fugu, from Sakana AI. One founder helped write the original research paper modern AI is built on, worth paying attention. Fugu isn't really an AI itself. It's a boss for other AIs, picks the best model for each part of a task, runs several simultaneously, and merges their answers. On one of the hardest coding tests, Fugu scored 73%. GPT-5.5 scored 58. But those scores come from Sakana's own testing, not independent verification. Users report it can be slow; some tasks take 30 minutes. A Wharton AI professor said it didn't feel as strong as the models it claims to beat. Still, the idea itself is hard to ignore. Future of AI, or a trick that won't hold up?
