At the start of NFL training camp, I made it a goal to shoot and post one image a day, and today is Day 3. One of the goals of this endeavor was to hold myself accountable for working hard at improving my seeing and my photography, but another goal was to hopefully educate and provide some insight into my process. In sports photography we sometimes talk about “shooting through” but it can have two different meanings, depending on context and situation. One way we talk about “shooting through” is to remind ourselves to “shoot through the play” - meaning, to not stop shooting right after the peak moment because the next moments and the reaction moments can provide images that are both powerful and storytelling. Another definition of “shooting through” is using foreground and background to create depth in an image — “shooting through” a scene to allow those elements frame the subject.
