In "Hyundai Terrace Commission: Kelly Akashi," artist Kelly Akashi sits down with stonemason Christian Inga to discuss how craft has shaped her work. At the center of this dialogue is “Monument (Altadena)” (2026), a towering recreation of the artist’s chimney through which Akashi sought to engage a lineage of masonry through craft traditions. The luminous 6,550 pound (and nearly 3,000 kilogram) structure warps light in a weightless tribute to the home as shelter. Reflecting on the collaborative process, Inga shared the inspiring words he gave to his team: “You have a chance to pay homage to your home.” The resulting work profoundly embodies what home means to everyone whose hand helped lay those bricks. “Hyundai Terrace Commission: Kelly Akashi” is on view through August 23 on the fifth-floor terrace of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
