Through a hands-on project in Dr. Lisa Harper’s sophomore English class, Nate Avina (SHP ’28) discovered the power of storytelling, creativity, and reflection. After spending time immersed in nature, students designed their own broadsides—inspired by the poster-like announcements popular from the 15th through 19th centuries. For Avina, the assignment became a heartfelt tribute to his late grandmother and the role his dog, Max, played in helping him process grief. “It was more than just an assignment,” he shared. “It was a release.” Through projects like these, SHP students are encouraged to bring their individuality, creativity, and authentic voices into the learning process. #shsatherton #universaldesignlearning
