In 2017 against #4 Penn State, Iowa suffered a heartbreaking 2-point defeat in a game where they made a horrific play call that gave the Nittany Lions a safety. In the middle of the second quarter, Iowa was backed up on their own 3-yard line and pitched the ball 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage into the middle of the end zone where their RB was tackled for a safety. That ended up being more than just a 2-point play, because Iowa tried to make up the deficit later on by going for 2 after touchdowns on two separate occasions, failing both attempts. So that play call not only gave Penn State 2 points, but also led to Iowa passing up two PATs and prevented themselves from 2 other points, totaling 4 points in Penn State’s favor. The Nittany Lions would eventually escape with a 2-point victory, 21-19, after scoring a touchdown on the final play of the game. 😬
