FOUND! 🔍 New Guinea's Mayr's Forest Rail has been rediscovered!
After being lost to science for 18 years, this elusive ground-dwelling bird has been photographed. 📸 Researchers deployed 73 remote camera traps across the Cyclops Mountains—one of New Guinea's most remote and least-explored landscapes—and sifted through thousands of images before capturing the first photograph of the species in nearly two decades. While using remote cameras to look for these ground-loving birds, scientists also documented the Masked Bowerbird and Northern Cassowary in new ranges unknown to scientists.
This rediscovery was made possible through a collaboration between international conservation partners and yappenda_papua, working alongside Indigenous Papuan communities. Their knowledge, stewardship, and commitment to protecting these forests were fundamental to the expedition's success.
