And everything she said after it was just as sharp. The Trump administration has spent months targeting the Smithsonian, signing an executive order to pull federal funding from exhibits it says “divide Americans based on race” and releasing a July 4 report accusing the nation’s most visited museums of “anti-white activism.” Crockett reminded the room of something important: the four Black girls murdered in the 1963 Birmingham church bombing would only be in their mid-seventies today. Ruby Bridges is only 71. This history is not ancient. It is living memory.
