China just completed the construction and testing of the largest fusion magnet ever built. This massive 582-ton toroidal field magnet reportedly stores three times more energy and features 1.3 times the volume of the equivalent coils designed for ITER, the 35-country international fusion project in France. Developed entirely with domestic materials and technology, it recently cleared full-parameter testing at the Institute of Plasma Physics in Hefei. Its critical role is to generate an intense 6.5-tesla magnetic field to trap and suspend plasma heated beyond 100 million degrees Celsius, preventing it from damaging the reactor walls. Ultimately, sixteen of these identical D-shaped coils will be arranged to form the full reactor ring.
