Issue 15 features our deepest feature lineup in more than three years of magazines—a whopping 68 pages of in-depth reporting, longform storytelling, and large format photography. We’re not leaving behind the quick-hit stories and there are still some of those in this issue (the whole issue is, as usual, 108 pages). But with the amount of short-form media we have access to, we think detailed, rich stories are in short supply these days. And the best way to read them will always be the printed page.
Honestly, it would be easy for us to load all 15 issues worth of Trail stories onto our website and sell digital subscriptions. It would certainly make them easier to read and everyone would have access to an archive of years of stories. But we didn’t create these stories with that in mind. Every step of the process—sourcing the stories and crafting pitches, writing and editing, photography, and page design—we tackle with the overall print product in mind.
