Idaho is not simply a red state. It is a state where too many people have stopped believing their vote matters. Only about 30% of registered Idaho voters participated in the 2026 primary. When seven out of ten voters stay home, a small group gets to decide who governs everyone else. Party registration does not tell the whole story either. Idaho’s closed Republican primary pushes some voters to register Republican simply so they can help choose the less extreme candidate in districts where the primary often decides the race. Idaho law limits which partisan primary ballot voters can receive, but party affiliation does not restrict anyone’s choices in the general election.
