Long before the Great Storm of 1900, an Irish missionary in Texas purchased this plot of land in 1841 to establish Trinity Episcopal Church in the young City of Galveston. Reverend Benjamin Eaton lived on the property, oversaw the construction of the church, donated the land to the parish, and, after serving as Trinity’s founding rector for 30 years, collapsed and died at the pulpit while preaching in 1871. He was later laid to rest beneath the church he helped build. In 1882, Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton designed the Eaton Memorial Chapel in Reverend Eaton’s honor. Nearly 145 years later, this beautiful Storm Survivor still stands proudly at the corner of Ball and 22nd Street—a lasting tribute to one of the men who helped shape both Trinity Episcopal Church and early Galveston.
