For a long time, I viewed Liberty Jail primarily (or even entirely) as a symbol of the struggles and injustices that early Latter-day Saints experienced in the 1830s and 40s. But this trip to Missouri taught me that Liberty Jail is just as much a symbol of learning or revelation. Instances like the imprisonment of church leaders at Liberty Jail and the Hawn's Mill Massacre certainly stand out because of the strong mistreatment and even brutality other settlers in Missouri has towards the Saints. But while visiting Liberty Jail, I learned of ways that the Saints fought back, many of which I wasn't familiar with. I got a different, less black and white perspective on certain exchanges between church leaders and Missouri government officials of the time. But perhaps most importantly, I was reminded of the valuable revelations given to Joseph Smith, especially Doctrine & Covenants section 121.
