Waylon Mercy is Dan Spivey, who was trained by Dusty Rhodes in Florida and debuted in 1983 in a tag team with Scott Hall. He held the AJPW World Tag Team Championship with Stan Hansen and formed The Skyscrapers with Sid Vicious in WCW. When Vicious suffered a punctured lung, a young Mark Callous, later The Undertaker, took his place as Spivey’s partner. Spivey has said he and Vince McMahon built the Waylon Mercy character on Robert De Niro’s Max Cady from Cape Fear. The gimmick ran only a few months, but Bray Wyatt later cited it as an influence and Spivey voiced Mercy the Buzzard in the Firefly Fun House in 2019.
