Recent work, Harbin Opera House, China. (Photography: vromerophoto ). The second opera house we’ve photographed, after the Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman and this one plays by very different rules. madarchitects designed a dune with ambitions, shaped by wind and snow rather than drawn by hand. From above, it rises from the landscape. Step inside, and cold white gives way to warm timber, part shell, part throat, part musical instrument. You sit down expecting Puccini, and half expect the building to start singing before the soprano does. And the best part, this is Harbin. Not Shanghai. Not Beijing. An industrial city in China’s far northeast, quietly doing something extraordinary.Strange, enormous beauty, sitting up there in the north, doing its own damn thing.
