In Focus: Andrea Schlieker on Georg Baselitz's gold paintings, as featured in ‘Back Again’ at White Cube Bermondsey
Made in 2025, the gold paintings belong to one of the last series Georg Baselitz created before his passing in April 2026. Returning to portraits of himself and his wife and longtime muse, Elke, the artist transformed familiar motifs into pared-back figures defined by fine black lines against luminous gold grounds.
In this film, independent curator Andrea Schlieker (andrea_schlieker ) reflects on the series, considering how the gold isolates the body, giving the figures an almost transcendental presence. She also explores Baselitz's unexpected gestures of bright colour, noting that they reference Willem de Kooning while revealing the artist's playful way of working, in which ‘you always find something unexpected in his paintings.’
📍 Georg Baselitz: Back Again is on view until 30 August 2026 at White Cube Bermondsey.
