Chandler just got something Arizona has never had. Seafood City opened its first Arizona location Thursday morning at Chandler Fashion Center. Dozens of people were already in line before sunrise and some camped out overnight to be first through the doors. Inside is nearly 66,000 square feet of Filipino, Asian and international groceries, a seafood department with live tanks where staff will clean and fry your pick right there, and a food hall with seating for more than 300 people. The chain started in San Diego in 1989 and has grown into the largest Filipino supermarket in North America. Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke said the store was two years in the making and called it a gathering place for the city. And here’s the part that says the most about it. This store is bigger than most of the 38 Seafood City locations that opened before it. Who’s making the drive out to Chandler first, and what are you hitting in the food hall?
