The Valley woke up to thunder and burning palm trees. Rain started falling before 4 a.m. Tuesday and picked back up around 7. Lightning sparked several tree fires across the East Valley, hit a palm near 7th Avenue and Bethany Home Road in central Phoenix, and Phoenix crews also pulled up to a house near Central and Camelback with smoke pouring out of the attic. One person was home and got out safely. Fire investigators are still working that cause and say there was a lot of lightning in the area at the time. More than 3,300 APS customers and 2,100 SRP customers lost power at the height of it, mostly around 31st to 35th Avenue and the 16th to 22nd Street corridor for APS, and Mesa and Gilbert for SRP. Almost everyone was back on by 10 a.m. Sky Harbor went to a ground stop that lifted before 7:30, over 100 flights delayed, only a handful canceled.
