For master calligrapher Jamyang Dorjee Chakrishar (jamyangchakrishar), calligraphy is a way of preserving Tibetan language and cultural heritage—and drawing attention to the knowledge Tibetan script has carried across generations. His signature calligraphy style, which he calls “Dharma Art,” fuses Buddhist imagery with miniature Tibetan writing. In these works, the writing forms Buddhist figures and brings together body, speech, and mind, traditionally represented on a Buddhist altar by a statue, scripture, and stupa. The words may include a mantra or the essence of the figure’s teachings. From a distance, each work appears as a unified image. Look closely, and lines of carefully written script begin to emerge.
