July 28th is World Conservation Day! This day acknowledges the importance of a healthy environment has on society. This day also raises the awareness about protecting our natural resources. For today, Channey letterpress printed a nature scene worth conserving. This hand carved woodcut, made in the 1890s, was engraved by Lewis Winter. Although most of the Lewis Winter Collection contains letterpress cuts designed for advertising in local newspapers, there are some woodcuts of nature scenes in Northern California. We could determine that this woodcut depicts Lake Tahoe, which means those are the Sierra Nevada mountains in the background.
