For Abi, it feels like yesterday when she learned her younger daughter, Simone, would be born with cystic fibrosis (CF). And in some ways, she says it feels like a generation ago when Abi’s older daughter, Meryl, was diagnosed with CF. Meryl is 8 now, and CF care has grown about as much as her in that time. Meryl faced challenges early on, including a bowel blockage, surgery and a three-month NICU stay. But Simone’s experience was quite different. Between Abi's pregnancies, CF care had advanced significantly. Most notably, the FDA approved Trikafta, a drug that restores function to the malfunctioning protein that causes CF. Under the supervision of our experts at the Breathing Institute and the Colorado Fetal Care Center, Abi took Trikafta while pregnant and nursing Simone in hopes of preventing CF-related complications.
