Maxon received a special honor from his band director: the “Ray of Sunshine” award. And he’s been shining even brighter since his family moved to Colorado. While Maxon’s mom Rita was pregnant with him, doctors noticed his head was measuring large. After he was born, a scan revealed he had half of his brain and fluid buildup. From that moment, Rita and Steven, Maxon’s dad, made a powerful decision: They wouldn’t let a scan define their son’s life. After multiple surgeries and a cerebral palsy diagnosis, Maxon began early therapies. While living in other states, his family struggled to find the activities and full school experience they knew he deserved.
