Katie is one of one. One clinical trial, one drug, one survivor, one miracle. At just 2 years old, Katie got sick during a family dinner. After a blood test, she was diagnosed with stage 4 T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) — an extremely aggressive form of blood cancer. Katie’s parents were told that she may not make it through the night, let alone to treatment. At a local hospital in California, three rounds of chemotherapy brought temporary remission, but her cancer came back. A bone marrow transplant gave hope, until tests showed relapse. “They told my parents they could take me home to live out the rest of my life,” Katie says. Her dad refused to give up.
