At just 10 days old, Tien fell ill with pneumonia. At the time, she was living in Vietnam, and a new symptom emerged — her skin began to turn yellow. Then it stayed that way for two months. Her parents, Tung and Hien, learned their baby girl had severe issues with her bile ducts and would need surgery. Despite treatments, Tien only got sicker. Her family moved to the U.S. in search of more advanced medical care and hope. But after waiting an entire year on the liver transplant waitlist in another state with no matches, they were told to prepare for the unthinkable: hospice care. Tung and Hien refused to give up hope. They transferred Tien to our Pediatric Liver Transplant Program, and within weeks, her condition was already improving.
