From a young age, Hannah and her family learned to expect the unexpected. One day, she might feel joyful and energetic and the next, she’d be debilitated by the pains and aches of her disease.
Then, after 17 and a half years, Hannah heard the words that she had long hoped for: She was cured of sickle cell disease.
“It was a pretty big moment — mind-blowing, actually,” Hannah recalls.
Today, we celebrate World Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Day. People like Hannah, who was diagnosed with sickle cell disease when she was just a newborn, help us to remember the importance of resilience and compassionate care.
