Cody had a pommel horse in his hospital room. And it wasn’t just to pass the time by practicing his gymnastic routines or because our caregivers go to great lengths to let kids be kids. He had a pommel horse in his hospital room because everything about his care was designed to help Cody be who he is today: a cancer survivor with big aspirations. Before he was diagnosed with a rare cancer called myelodysplastic syndrome at 9 years old, he dreamed of competing in a qualifying national competition for gymnastics. This year, he did just that, competing in the Western National Championships — and the pommel horse in the hospital helped him along the way. “It’s a huge accomplishment from where he was physically right after treatment,” Cody’s mom, Kerrie Anne, says.
