Meet Hunter—also known as Foxy or 2411M. In this exclusive footage by James Ford, Hunter cares for his newest pups born this year in the wilds of eastern North Carolina. Two years ago, Hunter left his birth pack and dispersed on his own to join a new pack. Now he is the breeding male for his pack, and his partner Spring (2361F) are raising their second litter together. His family is part of an encouraging new chapter for red wolves: Four litters were born in the wild this year, with 16 pups surviving their first few months. Before this year’s pups were born, only 22 adult red wolves remained in the wild. Hunter is the son of Hope, the red wolf matriarch whose family helped bring the species back from the brink after the wild population had dropped to as few as seven.
