There is something in the eyes of Amy Sherald’s subjects that draws you in – a knowing gaze that holds your attention. “I don’t think these portraits are confrontational, but they are present,” says Sherald. “They don’t have to say anything. But every time you look at that portrait, something is happening inside of you.” She paints Black Americans as unapologetic and unafraid, posed against monochromatic backgrounds.
