Today, in loving memory, we are crowning Jeanne Gibson, the inspiration for “Rosie the Riveter,” as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑 Known for her service on the American Home Front during World War II, Jeanne Gibson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She left home at age 18, traveling to Seattle to work as a welder at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, where she built destroyers for the war effort. Later, she traveled to Juneau, Alaska where she served at the Army Transportation Corp Embarkation center. After the war, Gibson earned her PhD in Educational Psychology from UC Berkeley. Gibson went on to teach public school for 30 years. In her 40s, she earned her pilot’s license and joined the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of licensed women pilots. Jeanne received many awards for her service. In 2024, she received the Congressional Gold Medal and took an Honor Flight to Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
