In 1848, 300 people gathered in a church in Seneca Falls, New York. They drafted a declaration. “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal.” Two words, added to the Declaration of Independence. Elizabeth Cady Stanton read them aloud, and the room argued for two days over whether to keep them in. They kept them in. Those two words cost them 72 years — until the 19th Amendment passed in 1920.
