His mentor, Charles Hamilton Houston — dean of Howard Law and the NAACP's first special counsel — spent 20 years training a generation of civil rights lawyers and dismantling "separate but equal" case by case. Marshall called him "the man who killed Jim Crow." Houston died in 1950. Four years before Brown v. Board. He never saw what he built.
