Does it seem like there have been more reports of shark sightings at New York City beaches recently? That’s because there has been. That’s due in part because there are more drones out there looking for them. It's no surprise that sharks are out there, but exactly where are they and when are they close to shore? That’s what the NYPD is using drones for: to detect the sharks, before they detect you. Or more likely, mistake you for a meal. Most people have a healthy fear of shark attacks, even though they are extremely rare, especially in NYC. The last recorded shark bite at a city beach was in 2023 — and that was the first one since the 1950s. The police drones have spotted seven sharks so far this summer, which is on pace to break a record. However, experts say the increased surveillance plays a role in that. #sharkweek #sharks #nyc #nbc4ny
