This #MuseumMonday highlights an integral land surveyor instrument: the Theodolite. A 19th century model Theodolite is currently on view in the Orientation Gallery at the Richmond Cottage. While it is not the exact model used by Samuel Richmond, it does represent the technology used at the time when Samuel worked as a Land Surveyor in the Town of Cutler. Theodolites have been in use for more than 500 years and are recognized as a primary instrument for measuring horizontal and vertical angles. Surveyors in the 1800s used these devices by sighting distant points from a leveled tripod to document land boundaries, establish triangulation networks, and support construction planning. An image of Samuel Richmond using a Theodolite is located in the Richmond Cottage Dining Room, showing him working with the instrument in front of the 1896 Richmond Cottage.
