It’s World Breastfeeding Week and I have some things to say.
A woman in a string bikini on a beach is celebrated. A mother feeding her baby in public is told to cover up or go somewhere private. One reveals significantly more than the other. I’ve never understood the math.
Here’s what I want to be clear about first: breastfeeding is not the only way. Formula is valid. Fed is fed. This is not an argument against formula, it’s an argument against shame.
It’s okay to breastfeed a newborn. It’s okay to breastfeed a toddler. I did, and I have the footage to prove it wasn’t traumatic or inappropriate or anything other than exactly what my child needed at the time.
It’s okay to nurse at home, in a restaurant, at the park, in a synagogue, on an airplane — wherever your baby is hungry.
For most of human history, breastfeeding through toddlerhood wasn’t a radical parenting choice. It was just what you did. The WHO still recommends it.
