One year after violence broke out between Syrian government forces and armed groups in the southern province of Suweida, the question of what lies ahead for the region remains. Discussions around political agreements, judicial proceedings, and the reintegration of displaced persons lie ahead, with the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic (CoI) urging authorities to prioritize victims’ involvement in ongoing investigations. Our Executive Director, Mouaz Moustafa, added that there have been back-channel negotiations to release detainees and kidnapped individuals on both sides, another priority of the CoI.
